New ARB Air Lockers

With over 200,000 units in use throughout the world, ARB Air Lockers are the choice replacement differential for 4WDers, off road competitors and commercial users requiring ultra tough and dependable traction on demand.

And ARB is pleased to announce that the award winning range continues to expand with the introduction of a number of new models for selected vehicles. Engineered and built in Australia, rear Air Lockers are now available for Hyundai Terracan, Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero models (including live axle and independent rear suspension variants), while front Air Lockers have also been introduced for the Hummer H3. These new additions give owners of most model variants the benefit of selecting both front and rear Air Lockers.

The attraction of an ARB Air Locker lies in the fact that it is a replacement differential that gives the best of both worlds – a normal open differential for on road use, and a positively locked differential for challenging off road situations. ARB Air Lockers utilise a 12-volt compressor that delivers high-pressure air to the differential centre, thereby engaging the locking mechanism and preventing the wheels from turning independently. With both wheels tied directly to the rotation of the crown wheel, the vehicle maintains maximum traction when the Air Locker is activated. Providing outright improvements to a vehicle’s off road capabilities, an Air Locker also allows a 4WD to be driven in a more controlled manner, thus reducing the likelihood of vehicle damage and environmental impact.

The new models all incorporate the Air Locker’s patented ‘timed’ locking mechanism for maximum strength and ultra fast disengaging, and a steel reinforced elastomer bonded annular seal designed to handle extreme temperatures. Continually developed and enhanced over the past 20 years to maintain award winning performance and reliability, over 100 Air Locker models are now available to suit a huge range of 2WD and 4WD applications.

With ARB offering free air compressors and other incentives when you purchase ARB Air Lockers before 31 November 2009, there’s never been a better time to equip your vehicle with the ultimate in traction on demand. Tip:

The number of driven wheels<br> You may not know this, but the average 4x4 is really only two wheel drive. Jack one rear wheel and one front wheel off the ground, and you will note that the wheels in the air are the ones to spin, not the ones on the ground. Even if your 4x4 has a rear limited slip differential, the same scenario applies. So, what can be done to help in this situation? Well, this is the reason a lot of four wheel drivers fit diff locks. A diff lock fitted to just the rear diff, means that if you have three wheels in the air, the one rear wheel on the ground is enough to continue forward motion. The wheel in the air will spin at exactly the same rate as the one on the ground.
