Anzac Day 2010 – Butcher Country Adventure.

Luxy asks “… it’s going to be wet, right?” “Yeah, the forecast is for a little rain” I replied. “Hmmmm”, says Luxy. “We might get a little wet, but think about how much fun the tracks are gonna be…”, I say in my most convincing voice. After a few more minutes discussing potential tracks and routes, Luxy was on board. Woohoo! Last minute 4wd trips are always the best! This was to going to be a real experience and a grand adventure! What were we getting ourselves into???

So after all that, I had to rush home a little early on Friday to pack the Patrol as quick as I could with the bare essentials. This involved a quick stop at the super market for food, beer from the bottle shop, filling up the fuel tanks and then I was on my way! I hit the Monash freeway at about 4:15pm and then it began to absolutely pour down with rain!! It was like being in a tropical storm, except cold!

Radiator Fan While under the hood spraying water repellent, check to see what type of radiator fan is fitted. Most 4x4's these days have the viscous coupling type, which means that when the engine is cool enough the fan doesn't spin at full speed. With the engine off, try and turn the fan. If it turns easily, you will probably get away without having to take off the fan belt. If it doesn't turn easily or yours is the fixed type, then you should remove the fan belt, If you don't and water enters the engine bay, the fan may act as a propeller, bend forward and cut a nice round hole through your radiator. It's certainly one problem you don't want to discover once you have completed the crossing. Even if it doesn't affect your radiator, you still do not want water being sprayed around, especially in a petrol 4x4.
