Glow plugs ZD30 – how long do they stay on after start.
Have noticed in a few threads about head cracks radiating from glow plug holes towards valve seats etc.
As curiousity would have, I connected a 12v led light to the glow plug rail and was amazed to find that after first start of the day light went out when the water temp gauge stabilized at normal indication (stopped rising)… took about 20 minutes for this to happen and light go out…. stop at shops for about an hour or so, turn key to start, glow plug light goes thru it’s normal thing and notice water temp at about 1/4 deflection (a bit below normal run indication)… start engine and light to the glow plug rail took about 5-7 minutes to go out..
Surely this can’t be normal.
Has any member had any issues with glow plugs … or could this be a possible flaw that contributes to head cracking??

The number of driven wheels
You may not know this, but the average 4x4 is really only two wheel drive. Jack one rear wheel and one front wheel off the ground, and you will note that the wheels in the air are the ones to spin, not the ones on the ground.
Even if your vehicle has a rear limited slip differential, the same scenario applies.
So, what can be done to help in this situation? Well, this is the reason a lot of four wheel drivers fit diff locks. A diff lock fitted to just the rear diff, means that if you have three wheels in the air, the one rear wheel on the ground is enough to continue forward motion. The wheel in the air will spin at exactly the same rate as the one on the ground.
