ACT - Brindabella National Park - Mon, 24 Aug 2009
Close to Canberra, this trek covers an area riddled with steep zigzagging climbs and descents accessible only by 4WD. In fine weather, it's a fairly easy drive, but in winter it becomes more challenging with rain and snow.

NSW - Abercrombie River NP - Mon, 19 Nov 2007
This trek is located in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales and offers the visitor some moderate four-wheel driving, and picturesque camping sites beside the Abercrombie River and Silent Creek. The area is also known for its trout fishing.

Follow the Cobb & Co and Charles Sturt routes from Broken Hill, where the bitumen gives way to dirt as it heads deeper into outback NSW. Discover old towns like Milparinka and Tibooburra, before finishing where NSW, SA and QLD join at Cameron Corner.

Set within the heart of outback NSW, the Darling River Run is a fascinating trek that takes you back through time. This route follows the meandering Darling River, between the historic town of Bourke and the town of Wentworth, where the Darling greets the Murray River.

The Howes Valley trek located in the heart of the Yengo National Park can be completed by itself or be incorporated into the Wiseman’s Ferry to Wollombi Trek (see Yengo National Park trek).

This route takes you to Mungo National Park from Mildura travelling on the Buronga Arumpo Road. It passes through some nice outback scenery including Lake Arumpo.

NSW - Stockton Beach - Wed, 03 Mar 2010
Stockton Beach is the 4WD and dune buggy playground capital of Australia. Just 2 hours north of Sydney via the freeway, this huge expanse of sand dune area is open for camping and frolicking. Some say the dunes are higher than in the Simpson Desert! A great experience.

NSW - Tallaganda National Park - Tue, 18 Dec 2007
The Tallaganda National Park/State Forest is 300km south west of Sydney and 50km south east of Canberra. The park has a large fluctuation in elevation and rainfall resulting in a variety of flora and fauna.

NSW - Watagan Mountains - Thu, 27 Dec 2007
Only 100km North of Sydney on the edge of the Great Divide, behind the Central Coast lies the rainforest gullies of the mountains. Accessible by 2WD unless raining, this area is quite popular with excellent campsites, walking trails and lookouts.

Situated just 100kms from Sydney, this is a great day or weekend trek. The majority of the tracks in Yengo National Park are 4WD only, so lock in your hubs and discover the great views and scenery.

NT - Boggy Hole - Tue, 20 Nov 2007
Finke Gorge is located within the Finke Gorge NP south of the West MacDonnell Ranges in the Alice Springs region. The most popular attraction is Boggy Hole, a permanent billabong of the Finke River. This is a good 4WD route to Uluru and/or Kings Canyon.

NT - Chambers Pillar - Thu, 22 Nov 2007
Chambers Pillar is a natural sandstone formation used by our famous early explorers as a navigational point. You can still read their signatures and inscriptions carved into the rock. It is also a beautiful photographic subject in a remote 4WD area.

NT - Gregory National Park - Mon, 15 Feb 2010
Gregory NP is around 13,000 square kms comprising of two sections - a smaller northeast section along the Victoria Hwy and a much larger southern section between the Victoria and Buntine Highways. This trek, which is entirely in the latter, contains a network of rather challenging 4WDing in a very remote and scenic region, taking in famous icons such as the Bullita Stock Route.

NT - Hay River - Fri, 18 Dec 2009
Suitable only to 4WDers with a strong sense of adventure and experience in remote desert travel. This track is largely unmarked and good map-reading skills are essential.

NT - Kakadu - Sun, 07 Mar 2010
World renowned Kakadu has plenty to offer the international and local tourist. The diversity and many attractions including amazing rock formations, rare wildlife, Aboriginal art and fascinating escarpments are all part of Kakadu National Park.

Situated 130kms from Darwin, Litchfield is an excellent day trip or long weekender. Magnificent waterfalls, scenery and offers 4WDers a couple of challenging tracks.

NT - Mereenie Loop - Thu, 04 Feb 2010
Linking the West MacDonnell Ranges and the World renowned resorts of Kings Canyon and Yulara, the Mereenie Loop Road gives visitors to the Red Centre a chance to see some spectacular scenery, without the need for backtracking to the Stuart Highway. This route is more appealing than the much longer sealed detour and is as Australian as it gets, passing through some of the Northern Territory’s most spectacular countryside.

NT - Old Andado Track - Mon, 03 Dec 2007
The Old Andado Track traverses fascinating terrain that includes mountain ranges, rocky gibber plains, desert sand dunes and floodplains in the Red Centre just south of Alice Springs.

Part of the "Outback Way", the Plenty Highway is the most direct route from central Queensland across to Alice Springs in central Australia. It is a wide stretch of very red sandy soil that when wet can be impassible - 4WD only.

NT - Roper Bar - Fri, 07 Dec 2007
This part of Australia is extremely remote and uninhabited. A 4WD trek through these parts can be an extension of the Gulf Track on your way further up North to Darwin or Arnhem Land.

The Tanami Track is essentially a great short-cut linking the Red Centre to the Kimberley. Although once a notorious 4WD track, it is now a graded dirt highway.

An alternative route to access the wonderful Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park, this trip from Finke east of the Stuart Highway takes in the Lambert Centre - the planimetric gravitational centre of Australia, and a short section of the Old Gunbarrel Highway before intersecting the main route of the Lasseter Highway near Curtain Springs. An ideal trip for those combining their trip to the Red Centre with an extended 4WD adventure of nearby Chambers Pillar, Old Andado, or even the Simpson Desert.

QLD - Expedition National Park - Wed, 19 Dec 2007
Expedition NP is a truly isolated wilderness park. It is only 350km from Highway 1 and 550km from Brisbane, yet it's quiet possible to have this 110,000 hectare park all to yourself, even on weekends. It's main attraction is the unique Robinson Gorge.

This track follows the Gulf of Carpentaria from Borroloola to Normanton in one of Australia's harshest outback areas. At first, it appears a dry and barren place but if you take a few side diversions you'll find gorges of paradise & rivers of barramundi.

QLD - Ka Ka Mundi - Carnarvon NP - Fri, 23 May 2008
Ka Ka Mundi is a remote section of the Carnarvon National Park and is a continuation of the Expedition NP trek note. This trek features a side trip to Wills Grave before taking in the tranquil Bunduncundoo Springs in Ka Ka Mundi.

QLD - Longreach to Innamincka - Fri, 30 Oct 2009
This trek starts at Longreach and travels in a south westerly direction passing through Stonehenge, Jundah and Windorah. It will take you through stunning outback Queensland and Channel Country, before ending at Innamincka in the beautiful Innamincka Regional Reserve.

The Birdsville Track runs south from Birdsville to Maree and passes through the Sturt Stony Desert. It is an extremely remote region but is strikingly beautiful in its harshness.

SA - Bore Track - Tue, 26 Jan 2010
The Bore Track is an access road for oil company vehicles and for property owners. This track is a great alternative to the wide gravel road of the Strzelecki Track which is more a highway than a track.

This is the main route from Innamincka to Birdsville. The track is about 420km and conditions vary greatly. The countryside is a seemingly endless gibber plain but this is Australia's prime cattle country - the Channel Country.

This rarely used route is a great alternative to crossing the Eyre Highway from Ceduna through to Port Augusta. Passing through the ranges and saltbush country there is the option to head further north to Kingoonya & onto Coober Pedy.

An alternative to Parachilna Gorge, the Glass Gorge Scenic Drive between Blinman and Parachilna offers some stunning scenery and a chance to visit one of the best mining ruins in the Flinders Ranges - Nuccaleena.

SA - Googs Track - Fri, 19 Feb 2010
A most adventurous short-cut for those travelling from the west to Coober Pedy & the Alice. Excellent views and plenty of wildlife, featuring memorials dedicated to Goog and Dinger, Goog’s Lake and Mount Finke.

SA - Innamincka Memorials and Markers - Tue, 07 Oct 2008
This trek which lies purely in the Innamincka Regional Reserve follows the memorials, markers and waterholes along Cooper Creek. It is a trek filled with history and culture from the Burke and Wills Expedition to protected Aboriginal sites and artefacts.

SA - Inside Track - Tue, 09 Mar 2010
The Inside Track was gazetted as a public road on 16th January 2002 and provides an alternative route that is also 35km shorter than the main Birdsville Track.

SA - Moralana Scenic Drive - Wed, 25 Nov 2009
The Moralana Scenic Drive connects the main Hawker - Wilpena and Hawker - Parachilna Roads via a good dirt road that offers stunning scenery and features like Wilpena Pound Range, Bunbinyunna Range, Black Gap Lookout, Elder Range and the historic Old Cueing Yards.

This trek starts at the town of Keith and journeys north through the magnificent Ngarkat Conservation Park and finishing at Lameroo. It provides an insight into the diverse flora of the Mallee Scrub and provides the traveller with medium 4WD challenges.

SA - Nilpena - A Pinch of Salt - Wed, 10 Mar 2010
This is one of the few access tracks to the shores of Lake Torrens. It is accessable via Nilpena Station

SA - Oodnadatta Track - Mon, 08 Mar 2010
If you’re a history buff you’re going to go nuts crossing the Oodnadatta Track. The track follows the orignal Ghan line from Marla to Oodnadatta and then on to Marree. There's stacks of ruins, mound springs, excellent conservation park information & railway sidings/rubble.

SA - Painted Desert - Mon, 19 Nov 2007
The Painted Desert has to be the highlight of the South Australian Desert experience. This trek from Coober Pedy takes as little as one day, but if you are a photographer or painter, you may choose to spend an entire week in the Painted Desert.

SA - Robe Beach Run - Sun, 03 Jan 2010
From Robe in south east SA to Beachport this trek heads south along a wild windswept beach. Challenging beach driving - 4WD essential.

SA - Simpson Desert - Thu, 25 Feb 2010
The Simpson Desert can be crossed via the French Line, WAA line or Rig Road. This trek provides a route using a combination of all 3 routes.

SA - Simpson Desert French Line - Wed, 23 Sep 2009
The French Line is the most direct route across the desert and traverses directly across the tops of over 1200 red sand dunes, with Big Red being the major challenge.

SA - Simpson Desert Rig Road - Thu, 17 Sep 2009
The Rig Road is the most southern access across the Simpson Desert. It is a longer route because it winds along the edge of dunes and crosses at the lowest points. Old clay-topped track is now eroding, but was once used for moving heavy equipment.

SA - Simpson Desert WAA Line - Thu, 20 Nov 2008
This track is similar to the French Line and although it has smaller dunes, it is very picturesque especially after rain. While in this area take a look at the Knolls, which is a scenic but fragile part of the Simpson so please stay on the track.

SA - St Mary Peak and Wilpena Pound Walk - Mon, 09 Nov 2009
The St Mary Peak Hike offers the adventurous and fit outdoor person the opportunity to enjoy a challenging, long hike to the highest point in the Flinders Ranges, which is also central to the local Adnyamathanha Aboriginal people Dreaming Story. Hikers will be rewards with 360° views of the ranges, surrounding plains and further west to the dry salt lake of Lake Torrens.

SA - Strzelecki Track - Sat, 06 Mar 2010
The Stzrelecki Track is strictly the route form Innamincka to Lyndhurst, however our trek note is for travellers starting at Innamincka and travelling down to Arkaroola Village in the heart of the Flinders Ranges.

SA - Walkers Crossing - Thu, 18 Sep 2008
Route for driving between Birdsville and Innamincka through the flood plain country of the nothern overlow of the Cooper Creek before rising onto the Sturt Stony Desert on the Birdsville Track.

SA - Wentworth to Renmark via Old Coach Road - Tue, 16 Feb 2010
Follow the old stock route that was once used by the ‘Overlanders’ who brought the very first stock to Adelaide overland from New South Wales. Rich with Aboriginal and European history, this trek will take you back in time to some rather turbulent years.

A good majority of this trek will take you through the tranquil and protected Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area before reaching Corinna - a town surrounded by thousands of hectares of pristine Tarkine wilderness.

Bruny Island lies off the east coast of Tasmania and is accessible by vehicular ferry from Kettering - 33km south of Hobart. This trek features many attractions including: Cape Bruny Lighthouse, Historic Adventure Bay, Fairy Penguins at the ‘The Neck’, and much more.

The Climes Track provides a unique opportunity to drive the wild coastline of Tasmania's west coast between Granville Harbour and Trial Harbour, avoiding a long inland detour on bitumen roads. The Climes Track is 4WD only.

TAS - Montezuma Falls and Ring River - Mon, 19 Oct 2009
The magnificant Montezuma Falls lies deep in state forest between Zeehan and Roseberry with many rivers and creeks to cross along the way. It is a delightful place to visit both for the excitement of the journey and for the experience of seeing Tasmania's highest fall up close.

The Murchison Highway is a sealed road in Tasmania’s northwest that starts at Rayna and heads north to the town of Somerset on the coast. This trek passes through many old mining towns such as Zeehan and Rosebery, while offering spectacular mountain scenery, cool thick forests and gentle plateaus.

A short one-way loop track out of Zeehan that takes in some history and is a bit of fun for everyone. This is only a 30 minute return trip but is well worth it if you are passing through Zeehan enroute to the nearby 4WD Montezuma Track.

The Canning Stock Route is a long-distance remote stretch of track through the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts. No longer in use as a stock route this is now a vehicular track allowing access to the wells constructed as stock watering holes.

Starting at Northcliffe, this trek features great coastal scenery with a taste of tall karri forests. The roads and tracks mainly vary from well formed gravel to soft sand. Windy Harbour is a charming hamlet with fabulous coastal outlooks from the drive around Point D’Entrecasteaux National Park. Also not to be missed is the short 30 minute walk with interpretive details up Mount Chudalup, which lies halfway between Northcliffe and Windy Harbour.

This track is a quick and easy way to get from the Great Central Road through to the Abandoned Section of the Old Gunbarrel Highway. Even though it does not offer many of the scenic features that other tracks offer in the area, it is still an interesting drive and provides relief from those torturous corrugations that you may have encountered further out on the Old Gunbarrel Highway.

From Broome Hill to Coolgardie, the Holland Track was originally built in the gold rush days as a shortcut to the Goldfields. Hardly ever visited for nearly 100 years, it was re-cut as a 4WD track in 1992 and is a popular trip with locals.

Located between Exmouth and Coral Bay about 1200km north of Perth, Ningaloo is about 300 km long and is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia. Camping is permitted in the Cape Range National Park (basic facilities) and within station properties (BYO eco-toilets).

The area covered by this trek is very ecologically diverse; containing woodlands, heathlands, iron ore range country and extensive mulga in the north. Start at Southern Cross with a short detour to Lake Seabrook through to Koolyanobbing. Then onto the Helena and Aurora Ranges; to Kurrajong Rock and northwest through Mt Manning Nature Reserve. Then north to Mt Elvire and return south to Bullfinch.

This trek takes you from Balladonia Road House, across the vast almost treeless grasslands of the Nullarbor, then through the thickly wooded areas to Toolinna Cove at the Baxter Cliffs. On the way you will visit Five Ways Well, a number of sink holes, ruins of a telegraph linesman’s hut, rock holes and a tank. Then you reach the spectacular 75 metre high Baxter’s Cliffs at Toolinna Cove. Here from the cliff tops you can view sharks, stingrays and fish patrolling up and down the small beach.
